How often to trim hair

No fixed number of weeks fits everyone: how often to trim hair depends on how fast the ends of your hair wear down. The more you comb through tangles, style with heat or spend time in strong sun, the faster they wear, and the sooner split ends show. We’d trim once you can see them.

Our women’s haircut page describes the service.

The sun in Chiang Mai

On a clear day in Chiang Mai, the sun’s UV, the rays that cause sunburn, is high or extreme at noon in every month except February and December. Hair that spends long hours in that sun wears faster at the ends.

What wears the ends

The tip of each hair has been on your head longest, so wear has built up most there. Combing through tangles adds to that wear, and hot styling tools damage the outer layer, the thin cover around each hair. At the tip, where that layer has worn through, the hair can split. Our split ends page lists what wears the ends less.

How often should you trim your hair if you want it to grow?

Hair is made in the follicle, below the skin, and a cut at the end never reaches it. So cutting the ends leaves growth unchanged, however often you trim. What a trim changes is the end: it takes off the worn part, split ends included. If you are growing your hair, go by the ends too.

What sets your pace

If you use heat on your hair most days, or it is often out in strong sun, its ends wear faster, so check them more often. If you do neither much, combing is what wears them most, and they can usually go longer between trims.
