Colour treated hair care

Sun and washing together wear the outer layer of each hair more than either does alone, and worn hair feels rougher and looks less shiny. For coloured hair, we’d keep a hat or scarf over it in strong sun and use conditioner after every shampoo. After colouring, we ask you to wait about two days before the first wash.

This page is for hair that has been coloured; the colouring itself is on our hair colour page.

How does sun wear hair?

Each hair is wrapped in a thin outer layer that guards the inside. Sunlight damages hair, and the outer layer takes more of the damage than the inside, because it faces the light first. That damage leaves weak spots in the outer layer.

What does washing add?

Washing lets a little colour out each time. It also puts strain on the hair, and the outer layer gives way most easily at the weak spots the sun left, so pieces of it come away.

What we’d do

  • After colouring, wait about two days before the first wash. If your scalp feels uncomfortable, you can wash right away.
  • In strong sun, keep a hat or scarf over your hair. Hair in its shade gets fewer weak spots.
  • Use conditioner after every shampoo. It smooths the outer layer, so a comb slides through and wears it less. How to dry your hair and go easy on heat is in our guide to frizzy hair in humidity.

When is the sun strongest in Chiang Mai?

UV, a part of sunlight that damages hair, is highest in Chiang Mai around May, and the rainy months up to August get nearly as much. So we’d keep the hat on through the rains as well. What your scalp needs in the sun is on our page about scalp sun protection.

Which part is yours

If you are out in strong sun most days and wash often, both apply to you, so we’d use the hat and the conditioner together. If you are mostly indoors, washing is the part that applies, so the conditioner is your step.
