Brassy hair

Brassy hair is lightened hair that looks yellow. Lightening brings hair up to yellow, and a toner lays colour over that yellow; as the toner washes out, the yellow shows again. A new toner covers it, and at home a purple shampoo tones the yellow down for a while.

Toner is an optional step with our hair highlights, and we fit it to what you’d like and what you want to spend.

What does a toner do?

A toner is a dye that sits near the surface of the hair. It adds colour on top and cannot make hair lighter, so the yellow stays underneath. It washes out over a number of shampoos.

What does a purple shampoo do?

A purple shampoo leaves a little violet colour on the hair. Violet sits opposite yellow on a colourist’s colour wheel, and opposite colours cancel each other out, so the hair looks less yellow. The violet washes out, so the change lasts only a while.

Which one is yours

If your hair has looked yellow since it was lightened, start with a toner. If the yellow came back after a toner, the toner has been washing out, and a purple shampoo between toners tones it down.
